Cracked feet, also known as heel fissures are a common problem for people of all ages, mostly caused by lack of moisture.
Other causes include, standing for long hours, using harsh soaps, cold weather, continuous exposure to water, being overweight, and wearing improper footwear. Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, thyroid disease and diabetes can also contribute to this problem.
Cracked feet look unattractive and, in some cases can lead to infection and extreme pain. The problem can be taken care of with some simple home remedies.
GET RID OF THE HARD,DRY AND DEAD SKIN
The first step towards beautiful feet is to get rid of the hard and dead skin that often has an unattractive yellowish appearance.
- A warm bath will soften up the skin. Put warm water in a bowl with a little bit of shower cream or soap. Dip your feet in the water and leave them in for 10 minutes. The warm water will soften the hard skin and it will be easier to remove. Wipe your feet with a towel without scrubbing.
- Rough exfoliation. Start scrubbing your feet with a stone file without applying to much pressure. Be gentle. Repeat this for a couple of times until you start to notice that most of the dead skin is removed.
- Soft exfoliation. For a thorough removal of the dead skin you can buy a proper peeling or you can make it yourself. Everything that you’ll need is sugar and a few drops of essential oil. For the best results use peppermint or tea tree oil. They are part of a lot of cosmetic creams and feet lotions. By using the mixture of sugar and oil start to rub your feet in circular motion. Thanks to the sugar crystals, you will be able to completely get rid of the dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin. At the end , wash your feet with warm water and a little bit of soap.
After you get rid of the hard layer, you need to “feed” your skin. For that purpose, make yourself a mask from a ripe banana and lemon juice. Mash one ripe banana and squeeze out the juice from one lemon. Put a towel on the floor and on top of that put plastic kitchen foil. Apply the mixture to your feet. Put a thicker layer on your heels and put down your feet on the foil. Relax for 10 minutes.
SOFTENING AND MOISTURIZING THE SKIN
Before you go to bed, rub Vaseline or olive oil on your feet and put on cotton socks. Then go to sleep.
To prevent the occurrence of dry and cracked skin on your feet, you need to regularly soften and moisturize your skin. You can even buy an appropriate foot cream and put it on your feet every night.
