The Best and the Worst Food for People with Diabetes

The basic rules in treating diabetes include an adequate nutrition, food that is just briefly cooked (steam cooking, boiling, frying must be avoided) and food that is freshly made in 5-6 small meals taken at around the same time every day. People suffering from diabetes must be careful with the intake of starch or complex carbohydrates, sticking to the principle that a tablespoon of flour is the same as a tablespoon of sugar. Also dinner is very important because it prevents hypoglycemia during sleep. It is implied that any and every diabetic should consult a doctor regarding their diet.

Meat, eggs and fish

Fish should be eaten at least twice a week and it is allowed to eat chicken and beef. The best way to cook meat is to boil it with a small amount of oil. One or max. two eggs are allowed during one week.

Milk and milk products

It is recommended to drink skimmed milk and small amounts of yogurt and sour cream with the lowest percentage of fat. You can’t drink more than ½ l per day depending upon whether that day you ate meat.

Soups and stews

They should be made from different types of vegetables without any oil and pasta. The simple rule is that you should use vegetables in 3 different colors (green, red, white). If it is boiled with meat you have to get rid of the fat that has accumulated on the top.

Vegetables

Vegetables should be the most abundant thing on the table of every diabetic. Vegetables that have small amounts of carbohydrates can be eaten in unlimited quantities: sprouts, spinach, green beans, zucchini, peppers, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, eggplant, celery, parsley, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, onions, broccoli and cauliflower.

Fruit

You can eat fruit that has a small amount of carbohydrates: strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, watermelon, cherries, lemon, melons, oranges and tangerines. Fruits like apples, cherries, pears, grapes, bananas, fresh figs, pineapples, mangoes and avocados have the  highest amounts of carbohydrates and should be avoided.

Dried fruit and nuts

Dried fruit contains 5 times more carbohydrates than raw fruit so it should be eaten in small quantities just like walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds etc.

Bread and pasta

You should never eat bread and pasta together. Pasta should be avoided as much as possible. You can eat bread only if it is made from whole wheat and just one piece of 50 g per meal.

Salt

Salt intake should be controlled.

Alcohol and coffee

Not recommended for diabetics. You can drink only unsweetened coffee.

Soft drinks and juices

They should be completely eliminated from the diet, except freshly squeezed juices from fruit with small quantities of carbohydrates and fresh vegetables.
